ANTH 278 - Politics of Identity: Nations and their Fragments

CR: 3
Prerequisite: First-year student by permission. This class examines how people come to think of themselves, to act, and to mobilize as members of communities united by “culture”: ethnic groups, social classes, races, and nations. We examine theories of “primordial” identities, and “constructed” identities, asking especially what processes might be involved both in constructing, and in weakening, identity, as well as how people contest these kinds of indentity. Offered alternate years. V.7
