The Modern Language Certificate program will consist of three tiers or levels of proficiency-building opportunities in increasing levels of language difficulty and task performance.

  • Tier 1: strengthen intermediate level proficiency skills through 200-level courses
  • Tier 2: achieve intermediate high/advanced proficiency through 300-level courses or study abroad
  • Tier 3: demonstrate linguistic competence through (1) a meaningful project designed by the student in collaboration with her language mentor/advisor on a topic related to the student’s interest or future professional pursuit; (2) an internship

The certificate program will focus on a communicative learning approach where students are presented with linguistic immersion opportunities on campus and abroad. Communicative instruction promotes second language acquisition through the completion of meaningful and real tasks in the target language using authentic materials.

Achieving meaningful proficiency levels in a foreign language requires strong commitment and perservance. Student who wish to pursue the Modern Language Certificate should have a minimum proficiency of Beginner High or Novice High for the language of study and strong commitment to pursuing the course of study. Students in the program are expected to use the selected language whenever possible during the course of the program (e.g., in class, with professors, with other students, and always when studying abroad).

The certificate may be earned in more than one language if the following requirements are completed for each language. Currently, the certificate program is limited to French, German, and Spanish. Other languages may be possible with permission of the dean of the College.
