This course explores the economic, social and political developments that have shaped the American nation and its foreign relations since 1865. Particular attention will be paid to the nature and impact of industrialization, immigration, urbanization, to the history of race relations, the rise of the U.S. as a global power and the emergence of–and challenges to–welfare-state liberalism.
