Performing Arts, B.A.

The performing arts major at Sweet Briar is strongly interdisciplinary and composed of three tracks - dance, music and theatre, allowing students to pursue one area in great depth while encouraging collaboration with other performing arts as much as possible. Sweet Briar’s close connection to the nearby Virginia Center for the Creative Arts (VCCA) brings in working artists who interact with students.


What Can You Do With a Degree in Performing Arts?

~ Composition

~ Non-profit arts management, particularly when

~ Production when combined with Sweet Briar’s Arts Management Certificate

Choose 1 of the following tracks:


Choose either the Dance, Music, or Theatre track and complete the track course requirements:

Performance Technique:


Choose 8 credits of performance technique. Each of the following courses, with the exception of DANC 311, may be repeated no more than 3 times for credit. Dance majors are expected to take 1 credit of performance technique each semester.

Interested in Graduate/Professional Programs?


If you are interested in pursuing graduate or professional programs for dance, the following courses are recommended in addition to the requirements listed above:

  • CR: 1-3 (topics in Choreography, Injury Prevention, and/or Kinesiology)
  • Additional dance technique courses

Choose 3 courses from the following:


Note: Only one course from each subject area may be chosen, with the exception of VART, where one course from art history and one course from studio art may be chosen.

Interested in Graduate/Professional Programs?


If you are interested in pursuing graduate or professional programs for music, the following courses are recommended as part of or in addition to the requirements listed above:

Choose 1 of the following courses:


Choose one from any course in the VART: Art History Track or any MUSC or DANC class.  Any class taken must be at least three credits.

For the Theatre track, the P/CR/NC grading option may be exercised for courses taken at the 100- and 200-level only. Additional information about the P/CR/NC grading option is available under the Academic Policies and Procedures  heading of the catalog.
