Admission Requirements


Admission Requirements

Seniors applying to the M.A.T. program must submit the following items for admission to the Master of Arts in Teaching program by January 1 for spring term or by August 1 for fall term:

  • Submission of application to the M.A.T. program (online)
  • A current résumé
  • A cover letter
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • All college transcripts (with an overall GPA of at least 2.75 and a GPA of at least 3.0 for any education courses)
  • Passing scores on the following examinations:
  • Praxis 2 (for the subject area in which you are seeking licensure)
  • Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment (VCLA)
  • Reading for Virginia Educations or RVE (Elementary Education candidates or Special Education Endorsement candidates only)
  • Proof of:
    • Certificate CW55691: Child Abuse and Neglect: Recognizing, Reporting and Responding for Educators
    • Certificate of completion for VDOE Dyslexia Awareness Training
    • Current hands-on CPR/first-aid course
    • Current tuberculin skin test from physician
    • Certificate of completion for the online tutorial from the Virginia State and Local Civic Education Module (Elementary Education candidates and Secondary History/Social Studies candidates only)

Applicants to the post-baccalaureate M.A.T. program must submit the following items for admission to the Master of Arts in Teaching program by January 1 for spring term or by August 1 for fall term:

  • Submission of application to the M.A.T. program (online)
  • A current résumé
  • A cover letter
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • All college transcripts (with an overall GPA of at least 2.75 and a GPA of at least 3.0 for any education courses)
  • Passing scores on the following examinations:
  • Praxis 1 Core/Math
  • Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment (VCLA)

In addition, during the first year of the program, students must complete/obtain proof of the following:

  • Passing scores on Praxis 2 (for the subject area for which you are seeking licensure)
  • Certificate CW55691: Child Abuse and Neglect: Recognizing, Reporting and Responding for Educators
  • Certificate of completion for VDOE Dyslexia Awareness Training
  • Current hands-on CPR/first aid course
  • Current tuberculin skin test from physician

Prerequisites

If a student has not enrolled in a Teacher Preparation program at his or her institution and has not taken the prerequisite professional studies courses prior to applying to the M.A.T. program, the student may be required to take additional undergraduate courses to fulfill requirements for initial licensure. Prerequisite requirements are determined on an individual basis.
