ARTH 251 - Rococo, Revolution, Romanticism CR: 3 Prerequisite: ARTH 115 or ARTH 116 This course explores European art from the mid-18th to the mid-19th century, paying special attention to rococo, neoclassical, and romantic imagery. How does France’s transition from aristrocracy to revolutionary republicanism and its aftermath relate to artistic production? What about the significance of European colonial entanglements and changing ideas about gender? We will also examine Engligtenment and romantic aesthetics and criticism. Students will interact with the college’s art collection throughout, including works by Jacques-Louis, Francisco Goya, William Blake, and Eugène Delacroix.
