ARTH 325 - Worldy Art:15th and 16th C Global Production and Exchange

CR: 3
Prerequisite: Any 100 or 200 level ARTH course. We usually think of the Renaissance as a distinctively European phenomenon, as a period of exuberant development of knowledge production in art, philosophy, literature, and religion. Can we use the category of Renaissance, “rebirth” to think about other cultures beyond Europe? How is the globe in the fifteenth and sixteenth century interconnected? What unexpected pathways link the histories of Europe, the Middle East, South and East Asia, and the Americas? In this class, we hope to deepen our understanding of global early modernity and transform the theoretical and methodological possibilities of comparative humanities and science through the lens of art history. Projects in this class will take advantage of Sweet Briar’s extensive print collection from this era.
