VART 110 - A Multiplicity of Media

CR: 3
This course will introduce students to works of art that depend on collaborative efforts, interdisciplinary partnerships that meld the visual arts, architecture, music, dance, and digital media. Each lecture will focus on one work of art that unifies these many artistic processes. An examination of the ballet Parade (1917) will study the sets and costumes of Picasso, the music of Satie, and the movements of Diaghilev’s ballet dancers. LA Opera’s recent production of Orpheus and Eurydice will introduce the combinatory power of music by Gluck, choreography of John Neumeir, and text by Ovid. Students will attend evening showings of the performances facilitated by the professor. Lectures will consider the history and process of the many artistic decisions that underpin a production, thus proving the proverbial adage that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. As a group, students will produce their own performance. This course counts for the CORE 150 requirement. C150, V.6a
