PHIL 327 - Critical Social Theory

Prerequisite: PHIL 129 or permission of the instructor.  A detailed philosophical exploration of critical social and political theory from the nineteenth century to the present. Possible topics include the nature of power and oppression; justice and human rights; economic inequality and exploitation; race and racism; gender and sexuality norms; historical transformation; and revolutionary politics. Possible figures and schools of thought include critical theoretic foundations (e.g., Hegel, Marx, Nietzsche, Weber, etc.); the Frankfurt School; post-structuralism; critical race theory; postcolonial studies; feminist theory; and queer theory.
