THTR 283 - American Drama

CR: 3
Prerequisite: Sophomore Standing. The history of dramatic literature in the United States is one of constant change and reinvention.  In this course we will examine that history, paying particular attention to the ways in which the stage has both consolidated and challenged the nation’s image of itself. As voices from historically marginalized groups have contested the dominace of a singular theatrical canon, there has been an increased diversity in both subject matter and form on American stages.  In considering this history, we will attempt to illimuinate the ways in which our own practice is spatially, temporally, and culturally situated.
